The Honors Introductory Biology course at the University of Arizona challenges a group of undergraduate students to assemble a website to represent and explain an area of current research within the Biological sciences. This project while acting as a catalyst to develop skills from interpreting scientific journals to creating a functioning website, creates a vehicle for students to become involved with contemporary research. Additionally the final project works as a great source of information for people in the community to come to read about developments that are occuring within the scientific world.
West Nile Virus
The area of research that was assigned to the amazingly talented Group Sixteen was that of the infamous West Nile Virus. Appearing only recently within the Americas, its presence and susequent threat of epidemic has made this pathogen a popular focus of media. On a scientific level the emergence of a new virus creates a need to not only understand the characteristics of this pathogen, but to have efficent ways of identifying and tracking this virus. The purpose of this site is to describe the current techniques being developed to detect West Nile Virus. In addition to this, there will be additional resources explaining more about the virus and what is known about it.
