SYMPTOMSSome of the following symptoms are associated with HIV... -frequent diarrhea -cough (dry cough lasting several days or longer, not caused by a cold) -chronic fatigue (tiredness) despite plenty of sleep -persistent fever (prolonged temperature of 99-101 degrees not caused by a cold) -swollen glands (enlarged lymph glands in the neck, groin, or armpit) -night sweats (sweats that soak the bed) -skin rash (pink-purple flat or raised blotches/bumps under the skin) -weight loss (loss of 10 lbs. or more without dieting or change in regular food intake) -oral problems (sores or white patches on the gums, tongue, or palate) -loss of appetite TRANSMISSIONHIV-1 has been found in a number of body fluids such as blood, semen, saliva, tears, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, breast milk, and cervical and vaginal secretions. Strong evidence indicates that HIV is transmitted only through 3 primary routes: sexual intercourse with an infected individual, exposure to infected blood or blood products, and from an infected mother to her child before or during birth. There is no evidence that supports transmission of HIV-1 through ordinary non-sexual contact.
