TRANSMISSION

HIV-1 has been found in a number of body fluids such as blood, semen, saliva, tears, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, breast milk, and cervical and vaginal secretions.  Strong evidence indicates that HIV is transmitted only through 3 primary routes:  sexual intercourse with an infected individual, exposure to infected blood or blood products, and from an infected mother to  her child before or during birth.  There is no evidence that supports transmission of HIV-1 through ordinary non-sexual contact.
