HIV/AIDS
Prevention for African Americans
|
* African-Americans account for 33% of the total AIDS cases in the US
* In 1994 African-American women comprised 57% of the total cases among
women
* Among infection drug users, African-Americans made up over half of
all AIDS cases in 1994
* Also in 1994, 62% of infected children were African-American
* 36% of homosexual AIDS cases occur in African-Americans
* Injection drug use is a major factor in infection among African-Americans
* African-Americans are twice as likely to use drugs intravenously
than whites so they have a greater risk of getting the disease this way
* Therefore, there are more black injection drug users with HIV than
white
* Funding agencies have not studied African-Americans as on of their
main focuses
* An obstacle of prevention for blacks is that there is suspicion about
the real intentions of white health official since the Tuskegee Syphilis
Study
* There are few prevention programs out there for African-Americans
* One intervention with videos exclusively with black actors that were
played in three weekly three hour group sessions found that their clients
reduced the amount of times they had unprotected anal intercourse by 50%
* Another intervention included activities that targeted black men
and gave out condom coupons for pharmacies and the people acquiring condoms
went up dramatically thus decreasing risks about black women and men
