HIV/Aids Prevention for Latinos

* Latinos account for 17% of the total AIDS cases
* Latino children under 13 years old make up 12% of the cases in their age group
* Latinos living in the Northeast experience a high rate of HIV
* In 1994, 41% of all AIDS cases in Latino men occurred in homosexual Latino men
* Also in 1994, 46% of all cases in Latino women were due to heterosexual contact and 39% due to injection drug use
* The rate of HIV infection for Latino gay/bisexual men increased 40% from March 1993 to June 1994
* This is the fastest increase in gay/bisexual men as a whole
* HIV risk for Latinos depends on their level of acculturation, life-style, where they were born, and where in the US they live
* Among married Latino men, 18% are likely to have multiple sex partners
* 60% of single Latino men have had multiple sex partners in the last 12 months
* Among the Latinos who have multiple sex partners, only 20% report regularly using a condom
* 67% of Latino women reported never using condoms with their steady partner
* This is because the women are looked down upon if they talk abut sex and the men usually determine the conditions and frequency of sex
* In a Mexico/US border town named Juarez, a study found that unsafe sex was higher among older men, factory workers, men who liked anonymous partner, and men who have had at least one STD
* For prevention to be effective, Latinos must talk about sex, homophobia, and specific cultural aspects that may hinder their health in the long run
* Some programs stress Latino peer education, self-esteem building, as well as issues about relationships, family, and culture
* An intervention group called Hermanos de Luna y Sol addresses issues for Latino gay/bisexual men such as homophobia, machismo, sexual abuse, racism and separation from family and culture
* Prevention programs for Latino youth help reduce unprotective sex and males become less likely to start sexual activity and females become less likely to have multiple partners
* In the future, more programs must target Latino injection drug users and homosexual men, which are the two groups with the highest rate of HIV
