HIV/AIDS Prevention for Lesbians

* HIV risk for women who have sex with women is dependent on whether or not they may shoot drugs, have sex with men, trade sex for money or drugs, or be victims of rape
* Lesbians who inject drugs have high HIV rates than women who have sex with men only
* A study found that of lesbians and bisexual women, 81% had sex with men in the last 3 years and of those 39% had unprotected vaginal sex and 11% had unprotected anal sex
* Another survey of lesbian and bisexual women reported that among those having sex with men, 39% were participating with a gay/bisexual man and 20% with a injection drug user
* HIV transmission risk is small but unspecified with female-to-female sex practices
* Oral sex has a low risk of transmission but sexual acts that result in vaginal trauma such as sharing sex toys are more risky
* Not much is known about female-to-female transmission because there has been no extensive studies that examine this area
* In a study, lesbians that engaged in risky behavior such as alcohol and drug use, unprotected heterosexual sex, and sex with gay men were doing so in order to cope with societal pressures
* A intervention group called Lyon-Martin Women’s Health Services trains lesbian and bisexual women as peer educator and send them to women’s bars, dance clubs, and sex club to give out sex info
* Another group called Lesbian AIDS Project runs safer sex workshops and a hotline
* Other groups target high-risk gay, bisexual, lesbian, and drug users or organize creative workshops such as class in pottery, photography, and literature while addressing HIV issues
* Prevention programs need to take into account the vast number of categories women who have sex with women may fall into
